I recently had the opportunity to present a case study on Larson Design Group’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) experience to a group of interested people at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Employee Ownership Forum. Our ESOP was formed in 2001 to assist in the transition of ownership from our first to second generation. This ownership model provided an excellent means of connecting all LDG employees to the mission, vision, values, and growth strategy that LDG has maintained during its entire history of local ownership, from 1993 to this day. The ESOP also gives all LDG employees the opportunity to benefit from the increased value of our company stock as the firm continues to grow and achieve top quartile industry performance results.

On May 18th and 19th, Larson Design Group employees participated in Williamsport’s Relay for Life. The Relay is an annual fundraiser which benefits the American Cancer Society. LDG employees were able to raise over $2600 by selling baked goods and collecting donations. In total, the American Cancer Society raised over $247,000 to use in the fight against cancer. Let’s think about the stereotypical “engineer” for a moment. What comes to mind? Intelligent? High achiever? Introvert? Confident? Poor communicator? Egotistical? Stubborn? Risk averse? These might make you think of the four friends on the show “The Big Bang Theory.” While these traits may not be shared by all engineers, certainly many of us can relate to the caricature.
Fortunately, being a confident high-achiever can serve a person well as he or she progresses through a career. Unfortunately, some of the other traits common to folks in technical careers can be limiting. For the people that got into engineering because they don’t like to deal with other people, the reality of the job may have come as a surprise. How do you get your brilliant design built if you can’t explain what you need to the contractor? If you alienate your client, how do you get more work? Business relationships still come down to the human beings conducting the relationship, and it’s important to have an understanding of how we tick.
